Body Language Decoded
Introduction
The term “nonverbal communication” was coined by psychiatrist Jurgen Ruesh in 1956. It is possible to convey meaning beyond words through non-verbal means such as body language, eye contact, and other forms of non-verbal interaction. Physical gestures are also a kind of nonverbal communication. Communication based on nonverbal cues has been valued for generations. According to the opinions of experts, nonverbal cues control the majority of interactions( Phutela, D. 2019).Each day, in every interaction, individuals send and get nonverbal responses and messages. Body language, such as eye contact and handshakes, expose people’s true selves and undeniably affect their interactions with others.Much information can be conveyed in a dialogue through nonverbal cues, according to latest researches.
Signs of deception in the video clip
What do we say unconsciously, and how can we decipher the messages that others send us inadvertently? These are questions that are explored in Body Language Decoded video clip. We delve into the research behind body language and its practical implications in fields as diverse as law enforcement, romance, business, national security, and more.Vrij,& Bull, (2018), considers a person’s level of ease or unease while contemplating deception, then goes on to describe the varying ways in which people’s physical gestures reveal their inner states. Darwin’s book “The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals” introduced the idea of micro-expressions(Darwin, & Prodger, 1998).
Use of Illustrators
These are gestures made with the hands while conversing. They are common and frequently serve as examples. One rate of illustrator utilization is observed during times of low stress, however the rate may go up or down as the stress level rises in a certain subject. Therefore, a shift in the number of artists employed as illustrators could be interpreted as evidence of dishonesty.
Analysis of Footwear
Joe Navarro, a former FBI special agent who devoted his life to the Behavioral Analysis Program, discovered that foot position can reveal more about a person’s true intentions than their expressions. The limbic system is responsible for the unconscious orientation of the feet toward the desired destination.
Use of Manipulators
Manipulators are hand gestures, just like illustrators. However, they aren’t utilized to make a point, but rather to distract from anxiety. Manipulators include things like fiddling with jewelry, plucking lint out of garments, and clapping and unclapping hands.
Complete Body Alignment
When asked more in-depth inquiries, an individual who is open and transparent will usually lean closer to the person they are talking to. Someone who isn’t being truthful during could shift their body’s position in a way that utterly disarms the person they are talking to.
Putting Hands Over Mouth
Also, much like when they were young, liars may sometimes cover their mouths with their hands or fingers as if to prevent the falsehoods from escaping.
Closed off
If someone is standing with their arms crossed, sitting with their legs crossed and arms drawn into their body, or is otherwise remaining rigid, it may be a sign that they are lying. These actions may be an attempt to keep the defensive energy at bay while working through the lie, or they may be an expression of the need for separation and isolation that comes with telling a lie.
Fidgeting
Anxiety about a topic can manifest in a number of different ways, including fidgeting (starting to play with an item, tapping one’s foot, shaking one’s leg, or getting up and walking about the room). If a person is fidgety but doesn’t seem nervous or uncomfortable, there may be more to the tale.
Interpersonal communication everyday encounters, 9th Edition provides a thorough introduction to the field by connecting theory and skills effectively to learners’ regular interactions (Wood, J.T. The new ninth edition places a strong emphasis on cultural diversity throughout, giving you the tools you need to connect effectively with people from different backgrounds. There is more focus on social media in this updated edition, with a section on that topic included in each chapter. An example of how I knew someone was lying to me based on their nonverbal language ,
I had a friend who was the ex-girlfriend to mycurrent boyfriend. One day after church service as we were taking photographs, the photographer told us to maintain eye contact as he captures the moment photograph. I was shocked to the realization that my friend was trying to avoid establishing eye contact with me while were are taking the photograph. This insinuated that she was trying to deceiveme that shes my friend yet shes holding a grudge with me for taking over after her. This is because she might have been going through emotions of guilt or shame, which is the reason did not want to make eye contact with me. This might be the cause.
I’ve learned a few things about myself through my own nonverbal communication style, and one of them is the importance of making and maintaining eye contact when talking; this can be taken as a sign of confidence and reliability. In fact, this is only one of many things I’ve picked up along the way. Moreover, I have a habit of speaking at a normal pace and loudness, both of which could be taken as signals that I am being honest. In addition, I often use hand gestures alongside my words to help portray the intensity of my enthusiasm.
Among the most important aspects I’ve learnt about body language is the need of paying attention to the many signals we give each other to ensure that the message we intend to convey gets across. One of the most crucial things to remember is the significance of paying close attention to the nonverbal signs being sent by others if one is to correctly interpret their intentions( Afifi, W. A. (2017). One way to do this is to observe the body language of those around you.
