Conflict Resolution
From the reflection, as a nurse manager, the main source of conflict between Jessica and Ralph age between the two nurses is a millennial and a baby boomer. These two individuals believe in different things; millennials believe things go fast in their life and they want quick success, whereas baby boomers believe things take time and that one has to work hard for the things they get and to succeed professionally. Conflict arises when Jessica starts asking about ways of being a nurse manager, and she has just completed her first year of nursing practice. The other source of conflict is ego, as Ralph believes one must climb the leadership ladder and go through various stages of nursing to become a nurse leader. Ego plays a part as the utterances by Ralph may damage Jessica’s self-esteem as he impatiently tells Jessica that she has not achieved any competency as a staff nurse.
The strategies that can be used to ensure harmonious working include; the nurse leader should encourage open communication between Jessica and Ralph and encouraging them to share what made them feel angry or agitated with the other party. As the nurse leader, they should understand what is going on and encourage meaningful and respectful conversation between each party so that everyone shares their point of view. The other strategy is to motivate teamwork; at first, Ralph commended Jessica for the good work she did, and therefore the nurse manager should encourage motivation from senior members to make sure that they do not feel discouraged even to ask questions (Fakhry& El Deep, 2020). The nurse leader should also advise Ralph to be free and understand how to deal with millennials, and vice versa, for Jessica toensure a harmonious working relationship.
