Cotton and the Global Origins of Capitalism

In his book, Cotton and the Global Origins of Capitalism, Sven Beckert depicts the importance of Global history which he considers to be one of the most exciting fields today in the history field. Moreover, one way of embracing global history is the history of commodities as these commodities link distant places for a single commodity and also provide a mutual understanding of the national, regional, and local histories. Additionally, the history of commodities enhances the understanding of the history of capitalism. For instance, Beckert singles out the commodity-centered study of Cotton farming in the Asian, African, and American fields and even as they processed to produce cloth in various factories. Moreover, Beckert notes Cotton processing to be the center of the Industrial Revolution on various continents. This book is important to its readers as it gives historians a sound understanding of the modern world as it focuses on the history of capitalism. Also, the book enables a reader’s understanding of the state’s contribution to capitalism. Additionally, the book distinguishes the arguments on capitalism and slavery.
