There are several instances in the video where non-verbal cues are evident. For example, at the beginning of the video, Ross is smiling when he hears the pregnancy news. However, he is shocked when he is told he is the baby’s father. Ross’s shocked face is seen by his jaws dropping and his eyes. The second instance of non-verbal cues is when Joey tells Ross he can do it. He convinces Ross that he is ready for the task ahead by making eye contact so that Ross believes he can surely do it. Ross even tells the two ladies watching, ‘ yes, he can do it.’ The third case is when Ross is sure that Phoebe is upset with him even before she utters anything. When Ross sits next to Phoebe, she suddenly covers her face with a newspaper and moves away from Ross to the edge of the seat, referred to as spatial behavior.

From the pictures, the one that shows a happy person is the one on the right. The face on the left is a fake smile on the face, and it looks like he is hiding some emotion behind that face. Also, the other reason that the right photo shows a genuine smile is because the face is up and shows some confidentiality. Someone faking a smile and trying to hide something will not be able to do so without being caught. So the smile is not even the real reason the person appears to be smiling. It is instead a cover-up for a real or an overconfident smile.
Using a Polygraph to Detect Deception
Based on the video, a polygraph can detect lies by a person under hypnosis, but it’s not as good as a lie detector when it comes to seeing the truth. It doesn’t make a good lie detector, either. A lie can still be detected, though. There’s just a different way to look at it. The video also has a great analysis of the polygrapher and explains why the lies are detected by measuring a person’s arousal of how stressed a person is. This is because a liar will be more stressed than someone speaking the truth. The polygraph utilizes several senses to check on one’s physiological changes that occur in the body when one is going through a stressful situation. This is important in measuring a person’s honesty and reliability in an interview. If a subject is over-stressed, they will have a higher heartbeat rate and must be extra cautious in answering questions. The blood pressure will also be higher, which means the subject has less of an internal pulse. As a result, they are less likely to tell the most pertinent truth that the interviewer wants to hear.
I believe that polygraphs work, although it depends on how well the subjects understand the questions and how much training they have received. They do work as long as the person knows the procedures, the equipment used to understand them, and how the examiner is watching them. Some people have negative attitudes about polygraphs, and others are afraid of being caught as liars.It is also important to note that a proper polygraphed test ensures that only truthful answers will come from the trial. However, most people that are in positions of authority can lie and use a false positive to gain favor. Consequently, it is not a perfect test, as many people lie under stress and, in some cases, are unaware of their lying tendencies.
