Family as an agent of Socialization
It is not hard to see that the family plays a prominent part in being a socialization agent. From the time a child is born, the family has to do all in its power to provide emotional support and affection for the child. The state lays the main obligation on families to ensure that their children have access to appropriate nourishment, clothing, shelter, education, and protection. This responsibility is placed on families by the state. When a child is provided with the assistance described above, they can grow normally. Another of the family’s clear responsibilities is to support those in need. When a person has an immediate need for emotional support or the direction and advice of a professional, they often turn to members of their own family for aid. The family offers many amenities, the vast majority of which have yet to be utilized. A person’s family may give them memories they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. The practice of many homes had become a well-liked pastime of participating in family activities together. As they spend precious time together participating in this pastime, families may forget about the rest of the world. This time may be fun and calming and bring the family back together, even if it is just for a few hours. Therefore, in this paper, I will explain the role of a family as an agent of Socialization.
The fundamental driver of Socialization is the family unit. Primary social agents are “those we live with or see daily who are of major emotional relevance to us,” according to one definition of the term (Pescaru 2018). A child’s immediate family is the only social unit they come into touch with throughout the first few years of their lives. The family provides for life’s requirements, including food, a place to sleep, love, and emotional and financial support. In addition, a child’s home is the first environment in which they are exposed to the outside world.
A child’s future is greatly influenced by their family, particularly their parents. They instil values and principles in the kid, including what kinds of behaviours, are and are not considered appropriate. Accepting the laws and customs of a community and being aware of the difference between good and wrong are essential components of the socialization process. “These values, norms, and conventions are not only passed down from one generation to the next but are, at the very least to some part, formed by each generation” (Grusec, 2014). Socialization may be initiated by the child’s parents and other family members and further developed via experience.
Furthermore, in whatever form it takes, the family is the primary way people learn to interact with others. Children pick up social cues from their parents and caregivers. They get experience with civil discourse during the conflict. In addition, they pick up strategies for achieving their goals from the people around them.
Structural functionalists believed that the primary reason for the family’s existence was to carry out particular duties. “The family is the primary unit for economic consumption and serves as the primary institution for the care and protection of children” (Musteva, 2014). In this way, the functions of social institutions are broken down into three categories: apparent, hidden, and dysfunctions. The term “latent function” refers to any advantage obtained indirectly as a consequence of the social structure. The term “manifest function” refers to the primary or intended purpose of the social structure. Dysfunction may be defined as any unfavourable consequences brought on by the structure.
It is quite obvious that the family serves a visible role. The objective of the family, from the moment the kid is born, is to give love and comfort to the youngster. The primary responsibility that the state places on families is to ensure that their offspring have access to adequate nutrition, clothes, housing, education, and protection. A youngster can develop appropriately when given these types of help. The provision of assistance is yet another obvious duty of the family. When a person has a pressing need for emotional support or professional guidance, they often go to members of their own family for assistance.
There are a great number of new features that the family provides. A person’s family may provide them with memories that will stay with them for the rest of their life. Spending time together as a family has become a popular hobby for many households (Pescaru, 2018). Families may forget about the outside world as they enjoy quality time together with this activity. Even if it is only for a few hours, this time may be enjoyable and soothing and bring the family back together.
In conclusion, a family provides its members with love and support. This supports the youngster in maturing emotionally, physically, and socially. The parent or legal guardian has the most significant role in a child’s maturation. The youngster may get valuable lessons in loyalty, Socialization, patriotism, and acquaintanceship from his or her interactions with family members. A youngster will have difficulty learning appropriate social behaviours without a parent or other caring adult.
