Endocrine System
This week’s readings, videos, and activities discussed mechanisms of hormonal alterations, hypothalamic-pituitary system alterations, and thyroid function alterations. These topics are related to my professional role as a nurse in a few ways. First, it is essential to understand the endocrine system and how it works to provide optimal care to patients. For example, suppose a patient is taking a medication that alters their hormone levels. In that case, it is essential to understand how that medication works to anticipate and manage any potential side effects (Nemeroff,2020). Additionally, many conditions that nurses care for are related to hormonal alterations, such as diabetes, so it is crucial to have a basic understanding of the endocrine system to provide the best possible care to patients.
These topics also related to my personal life in a few ways. First, as a woman of childbearing age, I am personally affected by hormonal alterations. I must understand how my hormones work in order to maintain my health. Additionally, many of the health conditions that hormonal alterations, such as diabetes can cause, are also conditions that run in my family. As a result, it is crucial for me to understand the endocrine system in order to reduce my risk for developing these conditions (Calina et al., 2019).
Lastly, I will apply the information from this week in my practice by educating myself and my patients about the endocrine system and how it works. I will also be sure to monitor patients closely for any potential side effects of medications that alter hormone levels.
