Character Analysis
This report analyzes Tartuffe’s character, emphasizing his roles, responsibilities, language, and symbolism. Tartuffe is a conman who focuses on defrauding others of their wealth. He uses religious influence to gain the trust of his target victims. For example, he can convince Madame Pernelle and Orgon that he is humble and righteous. Another character trait indicated by the character is canning behavior, as noted in the ability to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the victims and use their use their weaknesses to his advantage. Specifically, he establishes a detailed informal plan on how to swindle the victims, while at the same time preventing them from noticing his intentions. Tartuffe’s also display the character of lust, for example, he after Orgon’s wife, which eventually results in his downfall. Another character trait is the foolishness, because he believed that his ridiculous actions of manipulating his host family, to falsefelly acquire the property and reduce Orgon’s wife would be successful without considering the possibility of the failure of his actions.
Tartuffe’s plays a critical role in showing the seductive vice that was prevalent in the medieval times. Specifically, the author uses his character to indicate that there was sexual immorality and fraud in the medieval era. The character may also indicate the vices present in modern society, for example, while the vices indicated in the play are also common in modern society. Expressively, the theme of corrupted religious persons for their own benefits has been rampant historically and in modern society. The character also plays a role of showing that there are people who take care of others, without expecting significant benefits, for example, Orgon hosts Tartuffe’s; possibility due to his homeless situation. The character also shows the role of women empowerment, which is indicated by the Elmire rejecting Tartuffe’s demands and reporting her encounter to her husband. The author uses the character to set the play’s climax. Specifically, the character is offstage until the third act, scene 2; which brings the climax of the play. This approach shows the structural innovation of the author where scene 2 is used to show the rupturing of the house by the Tartuffe’s ; a religious conman.
The symbols displayed through the character include illness , legal documents and the strong box. The discord in marriage is indicated by Orgon focusing on Tartuffe’s; while ignoring his sick wife. The Orgon action to draw up the deeds to Tartuffe shows the reckless action that symbolizes the rejection of his family. The symbol of the strong box indicated the trust that Orgon has for Tartuffe . Specifically, by entrusting Tartuffes with the mysterious box, it shows the trust that exists between Orgon and Tartuffes. The imagery of the scene indicates the rich lifestyle, because the description of the Tarfusses host family shows that they are rich; hence they belong to the upper class in the mid 17th century, while Tartuffes represent the image of the homeless and other disadvantaged members of the society.
Tartuffe together with other character presentations by the author show the tone of Nimble, witty, and eccentric (Pucci, 2005). According to Hilton (2017), the author wrote the play in a rhyming verse, which copied in English leads to nursery-rhyme-y , and leads the characters to sound eloquent, smoothing and sewing Throughout the play, the interaction of Tartuffes and other characters shows the allusion, which is indicated by religious references such as Moses (1.2.4),literary references like Clitandre and Oronte and historical references such as Alcidamas, and Cato .
