How the Struggle over Civil Rights Shapes Contemporary American Society
The civil rights movement was a fight for social justice during the 1960s and 1950s for African Americans to achieve equal rights and freedoms under the law in America. The civil war, which had previously taken place, officially did away with slavery. Still, it did not end bias against people of color since they continued to endure the negative impacts of racism, particularly in the South. African Americans had faced more than enough violence and oppression by the mid-20th decade (Jones-Castro). They, together with white individuals, organized and started an unprecedented struggle for equality that went on for two decades. Sixty-two years later, the 1964 Civil Rights Act is still working today. It ended seclusion in public places and forbade prejudice based on sex, religion, ethnicity, and race. Though it may still exist in some regions and neighborhoods, it exists at fewer rates and incidences. Despite the remarkable progress the United States has undergone since 1964, the Civil Rights Act has continued to shape the nation’s access and definition of equal chance for all. Thus, civil rights have shaped and continue to shape contemporary American society through community building, reduced education disparities, increased opportunities for Blacks, and continued fight for human rights.
Firstly, the struggle over civil rights has continued to shape contemporary United States society through community building, provision of resources, and reduced education disparities. The national pledge to the Civil Rights Act and de-seclusion has spurred efforts to incorporate schools. Currently, school incorporation has never been more essential. Like reading and math, like social studies and science, diversity is no longer a luxury since everybody can now access and do it (Jones-Castro). Currently, institutions of learning must relook at and enhance admission practices and policies to uphold better social, economic, ethnic, and racial variety and integration. Also, in early childhood learning, elementary and high schools have a role in guaranteeing diversity among leaders and educators in schools and institutions (Jenkins). Deepening economic and racial resegregation in learning institutions, including colleges and high schools, has disparate consequences in underperforming and under-resourced schools, including differences in the quality of learning and restrictions to post-secondary teaching and career opportunities. Civil rights still affect the current education and highlight the issues faced by racially affected communities. Through the civil rights movement, Americans still see that diversity is crucial and reinforces communities. Therefore, this is why institutions and schools which are inclusive and diverse still exist and promote the idea that learners and communities should work together should work collectively to resolve seemingly intractable issues.
Secondly, the fight over civil rights shaped contemporary American society through increased opportunities for all, especially blacks. The importance of the civil rights movement and acts cannot be exaggerated. The move resulted in higher equality for immigrants, persons with disability, and women. Also, the act impacted the execution of educational policies that stresses equity in learning, including the high school and elementary education Act of 1965 and the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (Jones-Castro). Out of the nearly fifty million learners in America’s public schools, Black American learners comprise about fifteen percent of the population.
On the other hand, Preceding World War II, many Black individuals in America worked as servants, factory workers, and low-salaried farmers. In the early 1940s, associated war occupations were thriving; however, most African Americans were not offered a chance for better-paying careers. Also, they were not allowed to enroll in the military. After thousands of them threatened to protest in Washington to petition for equal employment freedoms, President Roosevelt delivered an Executive order that opened jobs in national defense and other government branches for every American, notwithstanding national origin, race, or color. Since then, African Americans have received the opportunity to seek jobs in government and the military (Jenkins).
A concerned and caring grown-up leads today’s civil right undertaking. There are fewer or fully no onlookers ensuring the individuals live up to the founding guideline of impartiality and the search for opportunity. Access to opportunity should not be forced or established by genetic cipher or zip code, as stated in the ethics of civil rights. Nonetheless, educational opportunities are usually backed by collaborative practices that result in well-performing learners, successful societies, and productive citizens across the United States. Now, novel provisions and laws are put in place to heighten access to affordable and safe housing for families and youngsters, offer more excellent avenues for youth and grown-up employment, improve access to transportation and nutrition and reform criminal law policies which restore communities and persons. In 2016, President Obama’s Stronger Together suggestion was a footstep on the right track (Jones-Castro). Stronger Together promotes the idea that communities and institutions must create community-based, robust, voluntary strategies to help local school districts develop innovative plans to achieve high achievement and equity. In this regard, generating a comprehensive infrastructure with enough resources increases learning prospects and satisfies each individual’s civil freedom to succeed. Such are just crucial ways an individual can continue working to ensure strengthening communities and equity in America.
Lastly, civil rights shaped contemporary American society through the continued fight for human rights by organizations such as the Black Lives Matter Movement. Police brutality, inequalities, and racial tensions are the main concerns in the United States. Black Americans experience disparities and problems across areas such as incarceration, housing, and employment despite the existence of civil rights laws and movements. People of color, especially Blacks in America, comprise about one million of overall 2.3 million individuals in prison and are likely to be incarcerated six times as compared to white citizens (Gallagher). The Black Lives Matter undertaking, just like the civil rights movement, has emphasized racial disparities and injustice within the criminal law system in the United States and abroad. It continues the legacy of civil rights and reawakens the need for a new move toward solving issues of disenfranchisement, discrimination, and racism. Unlike the former civil rights movement, the Black Lives Matter movement is not a singular voice looking for a change, such as those of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. Instead, it is an assembly of organizers and social activists standing against pervasive injustice, disenfranchisement, and police oppression, demanding a difference. Whereas some individuals argue that a group of activists is powerful, others view it as a fault. Over the years, the group has developed from a mere hashtag to a network that includes over thirty subdivisions in America and other nations. Also, the movement has remained to improve on strategies used by the civil rights movement, engaging in non-violent acts to bring people’s attention to the abuse of Black Americans and police killings.
In conclusion, the civil rights movement has existed since then and continues to influence contemporary American society. Successive, projected campaigns of non-violent acts took away the racist organization strength that infiltrated Southern America. One of the best accomplishments of the movement is the lead to economic and higher social mobility for Black Americans across the United States. African Americans can now access equal opportunities for education and employment. Also, the movement encouraged the rise of the Black Lives Matter Movement, leading to a fight against racial discrimination and greater access to resources and opportunities for women and the disabled.
