Among the pros of identifying the roles of nurse educators and leaders as advanced practice nurses is that nurse educators have a remarkable spectrum of responsibilities. They include developing the nursing curriculum as well as designing new course content in the field. Also, they play a critical part in the instruction processes of the nursing learners, evaluating and monitoring the educational processes. In clinical settings, nurse educators are responsible for implementing care and research standards (Miranda Neto et al., 2018). Nurse leaders, on their part, help oversee the management of nursing staff in medical departments. The nurse leaders further focus on the management of resources, patient care, and implementation of strategies.
Identifying the roles of nurse leaders and educators also have cons. Since educators teach in selected specialties, they have to undergo rigorous training to qualify as educators. To be an influential nurse leader, one must possess creative thinking and flexibility. AACN, or the American Association of College nurses (Mohr & Coke, 2018), identifies Advanced Practice responsibility under different titles (nurse midwife, nurse anesthetist, clinical nurse specialist, and nurse practitioner). Thus, to get the title APRN (advanced practice registered nurse), one has to offer each of the four defined nurse roles.
Anchored on these pros and cons, I agree that the roles meet the status of advanced practice nurses. The education preparedness of the two with the graduate level is of high quality for the three areas. Nonetheless, the areas advanced nursing practitioners practice is different, primarily in the nurse educator roles since these responsibilities do not offer direct patient care. As such, a different identity or title for the nurse educators and leaders could be more suitable than referring to them as advanced nurse practitioners. This is because calling the nurse leaders and educators advanced practice nurses might need clarification for the patients and the public.
