Thesis on the vast majority of executions in 2020

The death penalty is a highly controversial topic, and several arguments exist for and against its use. The United States needs to stop using the death penalty by pointing out the high costs associated with its use, the risk of executing innocent people, and the fact that it does not seem to deter crime any more effective than other forms of punishment. It is unlikely that the Dominican Republic would be able to persuade the United States to stop using the death penalty, as there is significant public support for the practice in the country; however, it has not been used recently, as per the records(Cholbi et al., 2018, pp. 517-544).It could try to persuade the United States to stop using the death penalty by pointing out that it is an inhumane and ineffective punishment(Azamjonovich, 2021, pp. 1376-1381). The Dominican Republic could also highlight that the United States is in the minority of countries that still use the death penalty; most developed nations have abolished it. The European Union has often called on the US to abolish the death penalty and offered financial incentives to states that agree to do so(Azamjonovich, 2021, pp. 1376-1381).
The four countries that carried out the vast majority of executions in 2020 all have something in common: they are all authoritarian regimes with little regard for human rights. Iran, Egypt, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia are all countries where the government has tight control over the population, does not tolerate dissent, and is likely to use it to intimidate and silence their opponents. In addition, all four countries have large Muslim populations, and all except for Iraq use sharia law, at least partly, to justify their use of the death penalty. They could also argue that the death penalty is not an effective crime deterrent and is more expensive than life imprisonment(Cholbi et al., 2018, pp. 517-544).
Dominica was unable to confirm the date of the last death sentence. This is likely because Dominica has not carried out any executions since becoming independent in 1978 and has had a de facto moratorium on the death penalty since 1991.However, it is generally accepted that capital punishment should be limited to the most serious crimes and should not be used arbitrarily or disproportionately(Sandholtz et al., 2018, p. 159). There is no evidence that the Dominican Republic has violated any international standards for the use of capital punishment. However, some critics argue that the death penalty is still used disproportionately in the country, with poor and minority defendants more likely to be sentenced to death than wealthier and more privileged defendants.
